Gass was the last survivor of the Expedition, dying at the age of 98 in 1870. The Expedition traveled just under 4,000 miles, leaving St. Louis on May 14, 1804, and returning on September 23, 1806. The Expedition spent the winter of 1805-06 at Fort Clatsop, near the mouth of the Columbia River.
